What To Expect

Initial Meeting

A physician will evaluate you in their office to determine if you have acute recurrent pancreatitis and pancreas divisum as well as if you are eligible for the SHARP study. If you are eligible, he or she will review the study with you.  If you agree to participate, you will be asked a series of questions so we can get a better understanding of your overall health and symptoms. You will be asked to return within 30 days for the procedure.

Procedure Day

On the day of your procedure, you will undergo an internal ultrasound procedure under sedation to examine the pancreas for any significant abnormalities. If the ultrasound does not show another explanation for your pancreatitis, you will be randomized to an ERCP with minor papilla sphincterotomy or no ERCP. There is a 50% chance that you will be in one group or the other.

Follow Up

You will return to the site about 30 days after your procedure for an abdominal x-ray and a brief meeting with the study coordinator.  After that, you will be contacted by telephone every six months to see how you are doing.  We hope to follow participants for up to 4 years after the procedure, mostly by telephone. You will be encouraged to contact the enrolling site if you develop any signs or symptoms for acute pancreatitis.
